WASHINGTON — The Maclean’s Watch desk put two films on the reel. On 23 September, at 19:00 Eastern, it screened Revolution of Our Times. On 24 September, at 19:00 Eastern, it screened She’s in Jail. Both played on this site, in the Watch centre, as special screenings — not as a teaser and not as a hand-off to someone else’s player.
Revolution of Our Times is Kiwi Chow’s 2021 Cannes documentary of the 2019 protests. It runs 152 minutes. The title is the slogan the Hong Kong courts later treated as illegal. The film is banned in the city it documents. The only name on the credits who later stepped forward is the director.
She’s in Jail is the 2024 documentary dedicated to Chow Hang-tung, the Hong Kong barrister, labour organiser and former vice-chair of the Hong Kong Alliance. The film, produced by Asian Commons with Tomoko Ako and issued by The 29 Principles, runs 104 minutes. It opens on the morning the police came for her chambers and stays with the friends and comrades who still speak her name.
